About.

Julia Schewalie's work focuses on the reflection of light on color-neutral surfaces. The material used in each case, for example vinyl records, is thereby wrested from its original purpose. This is followed by the creative work process: she sorts, constructs, arranges, accurately cuts, composes small geometric parts into large surfaces, creates curvatures and restructures image surfaces. In this way the material appears sometimes hard, sometimes soft, without betraying its real state. Standing and above all in motion, it seduces the viewer into an interplay between construction and deconstruction. Changing reflections and reflections on the surface are always part of the work. The works capture the space including natural and artificial light and the viewer in an individual way. They change continuously and do not know any fixed state.

Julia Schewalie (born 1988) studied painting and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich (Akademie der bildenden Künste, München) from 2009-2015 in the class of Prof. Anke Doberauer and Prof. Hermann Pitz. Since then she has been working as a freelance artist. Her works are exhibited nationally and internationally. The Bavarian State Painting Collection (Bayrische Staatsgemäldesammlung) already owns two of her works of art. In 2016 they purchased a work of art on the occasion of an exhibition at the Kunsthaus Kaufbeuren. When the artist was awarded the Art Prize of the Aichach Art Association in 2018, it again was the Bavarian State Collection that purchased the award-winning work. In 2019 the artist was invited to Cyprus for the art project EcoArt 2019 - Public Nature - Private Culture. The resulting exhibition, which was originally only planned until the end of December 2019, was extended until March 31, 2020 due to the positive response and the great interest shown by visitors. In 2020 she was represented at Art Karlsruhe by the gallery Filser&Gräf. Among other things, a large solo exhibition in the Frankfurt gallery Schierke Seinecke and a working scholarship in Villa Paula Klenová, Czech Republic, in cooperation with the Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus were planned. Both will be realized in 2021 due to the Covid-19-Pandemic.
